What you should know:
State Board of Education members unanimously approved the closure of four elementary schools and two middle schools in Kanawha County during their regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday. The county board of education voted to shutter the schools earlier this year. McKinley Middle School students will be sent to Hayes Middle School, while East Bank Middle School students will be consolidated into DuPont Middle School, beginning with the 2025-26 school year. Students at the four elementary schools, all located in the eastern region of the Kanawha Valley, will continue to attend their respective schools until a new primary building can be built.
Fees on local telephone bills will soon increase after Kanawha County Commissioners approved a change to the Metro 911 fee — the first since 2015 — earlier this week. Residents will be charged $7.95 per line each month, while commercial customers will be charged $12.75 per line each month. The rate increase is expected to go into effect on Dec. 1.
Cedar Grove town council was scheduled to meet on Nov. 12, but that meeting was canceled on Tuesday morning. Officials said they’ve rescheduled the meeting for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 — the only date the panel will meet this month.
Montgomery General Hospital will host a craft fair on Friday, Nov. 15, beginning at 9 a.m.
St. Albans Christmas events have been announced by city officials. Among this year’s festivities: The St. Albans Festival of Lights, set to open with special programming from Wednesday, Nov. 26 to Friday, Nov. 29; the Main Street Christmas Market and Christmas tree lighting event, set for 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6; and the annual Christmas Parade, set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Applications for Clendenin’s annual holiday parade and contests are now open and available on the town’s Facebook page. The “Christmas on Main” event runs from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Kanawha County Courthouse has announced holiday closings for the remainder of 2024. The courthouse will be closed Nov. 28-29 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 24-25 for Christmas, and Dec. 31-Jan. 1 for the New Year holiday.
