What you should know:
Traffic Alert: CSX contractors will be repairing rail defects and other issues in St. Albans this week, which will affect traffic in some areas of the city. Beginning today (Monday, March 10), the B Street railroad crossing will be closed to all vehicles. The closure will continue through Thursday, March 13. Seperately, on Wednesday, March 12, the Riverbend Boulevard crossing will be closed for the entire day. Officials said motorists should find alternative routes during the closures.
Safety Check: Sunday marked the start of daylight saving time. Officials with Kanawha County Emergency Management (KCEM) say this is a good time to focus on your safety. “As we spring forward, this is a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms,” officials wrote in a recent Facebook post. “While you change the batteries in your smoke alarms, create a fire escape plan with your family.” KCEM representatives will install smoke detectors for free in homes without them. Residents should call 304-357-0966 to schedule an installation.
Easter Candy: Hernshaw Community Church has begun selling hand-crafted Easter candy for the 2025 season. The church is offering both chocolate suckers and chocolate eggs. Eggs come in small, quarter-pound and half-pound sizes, in five flavors (peanut butter, coconut, cherry nut, maple nut and “smoothie”). Small eggs are currently being sold at various businesses in Marmet and Kanawha City, and can also be picked up at the church at 2827 Lens Creek Road in Hernshaw on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more info or to place an order, see their post on Facebook.
Egg Fundraiser: Residents of Nitro can have their yards “egged” as part of a fundraiser for a local youth organization. Members of Nitro Youth Football and Cheer are offering to deliver candy-filled Easter eggs to your yard the evening before Easter and leave a personalized note from the Easter Bunny taped to your door. Prices range from $25 to $65, and proceeds will be used to purchase equipment, uniforms and other items for young athletes. The deadline to order in Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
