The Kanawha County Board of Education voted Tuesday to close another school. But unlike East Bank Middle School and McKinley Middle School, who are scheduled to shutter at the start of the 2025-26, this one won’t be closed for a few more years. Belle Elementary School became the third local school to be closed by members of the Kanawha County Board of Education in the past two weeks, after panelists voted to shutter the school following a public hearing at Riverside High School on Tuesday evening.
Nitro City Council voted 7-1 to sell the city’s wastewater treatment facility to West Virginia American Water on Tuesday, with council at large member Andy Shamblin being the only panelist to vote against the measure. (Full article coming in Thursday’s Kanawha Valley Update.)
Four Kanawha County high schools – three public and one private – were recently recognized for their efforts to help students plan for college and other post-secondary education programs.
The Rock and Gem Show returns to the South Charleston Community Center for its 50th year on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20, bringing rare earth specimens, crystals, fossils, artifacts, hand-crafted jewelry and more to visitors from throughout the Kanawha Valley.
The Filipino-American Festival will be held for the first time on Saturday at the state Capitol Complex in Charleston, celebrating Filipino Heritage Month will authentic cuisine, dance, games and more.
